MYTHOLOGY
Kythira, the island of Aphrodite, is the place where I i according to Hellenic mythology, the goddess of love was born. The epic poet Isiodos writes in Theogonia (Godbirth) how Aphrodite emerged from the sea foam of Kythira, when Kronos cut off his father's Uranus' genitalia and threw them in the sea. According to the same myth, Aphrodite was carried away by the waves and found herself at Pafos, Cyprus. That is why ancient Greeks worshipped the Goddess in two forms: as Pandimos Aphrodite, protectress of carnal love worshipped mainly in Cyprus and as Celestial Aphrodite, protectress of pure love, mainly worshipped in Kythira.
ENVIRONMENT
The slow economic development, the heavy emigration of the islanders and the exceptionally slow tourist development have left the environment of Kythira almost unchanged all these centuries.
